The IHC English is an entry-level course that trains candidates to teach English as a foreign language to students in a private language school context. Upon qualifying, participants will have reached a standard suitable for employment as a language teacher. The format and content is very similar to the CELTA and Trinity TESOL, the difference is that the course is assessed and accredited by IHWO’s Assessment Unit but not by an external exam board.

  • Length: It takes 4 weeks to complete this course full time but some centres offer it part time, over 3 months.
  • Hours: The course includes a minimum of 120 hours of input, 6 hours of observed and assessed teaching practice. Plus homework, assignments and self-study.
  • I will learn: Teaching methodology, classroom management, language analysis and selecting materials. How to plan and deliver a lesson, through teaching practice, written assignments and group discussions, all guided by experienced tutors.

An initial qualification in teaching English as a foreign language is essential for anyone who would like to make this their profession. It is suitable for candidates with no teaching experience or those with teaching experience but not in language teaching.
The entry requirement is that you are a proficient English language user (between CEFR Level C1 and C2 or above) and educated to the standard required for entry into higher education.
