The IHC English is an entry-level course that trains candidates to teach English as a foreign language to students in a private language school context. Upon qualifying, participants will have reached a standard suitable for employment as a language teacher. The format and content is very similar to the CELTA and Trinity TESOL, the difference is that the course is assessed and accredited by IHWO’s Assessment Unit but not by an external exam board.

  • Length: It takes 4 weeks to complete this course full time but some centres offer it part time, over 3 months.
  • Hours: The course includes a minimum of 120 hours of input, 6 hours of observed and assessed teaching practice. Plus homework, assignments and self-study.
  • I will learn: Teaching methodology, classroom management, language analysis and selecting materials. How to plan and deliver a lesson, through teaching practice, written assignments and group discussions, all guided by experienced tutors.

This course covers the key components that most private language school employers have with regards to the amount of input and teaching practice that an initial teacher training course should include. However, policies vary from country to country and school to school so it is always worth checking the policy in a particular location if you have somewhere specific you would like to work.
The certificate is recognised by IH schools around the world. Please note this course does not have external exam body validation, it is certificated by IHWO Assessment Unit.
