Celebrating the life and memory of Brita Haycraft

Brita Haycraft, co-founder of International House, was a true pioneer in language education. She passed away peacefully on 28th December 2024, aged 93.

A talented linguist and distinguished academic, Brita was deeply passionate about teaching pronunciation and authored several influential books on the subject. Alongside her husband, she revolutionised language teaching by championing the communicative method, emphasising meaningful interaction and real-world communication.

Brita's lifelong dedication to empowering learners and her commitment to excellence in language teaching continue to inspire educators worldwide. In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award at the British Council ELTons in 2013.

Her legacy lives on in every International House classroom, reminding us of the importance of human connection, effective communication, and a lifelong love of learning.

Calling all IH Teachers: open training sessions with IH Sofia

Words from Jack, IH Sofia’s ADoS: “After our centre had the privilege of hosting the IH YL conference during November, I became inspired by the flow of ideas shared by the abundance of passionate teachers and academic managers.YL Conference at IH Sofia

We wanted to collaborate and continue this connection with other schools in the network and looked for a way to do this. Since the Covid pandemic, our in-house training has taken place solely online. Therefore, we saw an opportunity to open our training sessions up to other schools around the network to share the knowledge of our team, and to learn from fellow teachers.

Since then, we have been joined by teachers from IH Milano and taken part in fascinating sessions on creating a paper-less classroom and incorporating exam skills into our Young Learner classes.

Moving forwards, if you would like to join our exciting training program then we would love to hear from you.”

Smarter Teacher, Smarter Learning – free webinar series from IH Portugal

Smarter Learning is a series of free online seminars given by Academic Managers and experienced teachers working at IH schools in Portugal. They’re aimed at all teachers – novice and experienced, working at language schools, in mainstream education or self-employed.

The objective of the seminars is to reach out not just to our local community of teachers, but nationally and internationally to help publicise the name of International House.

The sessions are very practical with lots of easy-to-use and adapt activities and techniques, interwoven with relevant theory. After each session, attendees receive a PDF of the presentation slides and a certificate of attendance.

Feedback has been gratifyingly positive, so do sign up for the next four sessions in this series in March and May if you or anyone you know is interested and look out for the 2025-2026 cycle!

Who’s representing your school in the IH Global Debating Challenge?

The Global Debating Challenge is an exciting new opportunity for students in IH schools to improve their oracy skills (increasingly important in the age of AI) whilst also meeting students from other IH schools around the world.

IH schools had until 8th February to send in a maximum of two entries which could be in one or both of the categories: Teens (14-17) or Adults (18+). The entries consisted of a 3-minute video where the student spoke about a given topic. Six finalists will be selected from these entries to participate in a live final on Zoom on 22nd February.

All the finalists will receive a digital badge that schools can put on their website, and the winning team of three will also receive a prize.

Schools can access a folder with the criteria the entries will be judged on, as well as a suggested lesson plan for preparing students for debates. Any schools who have questions about the competition should contact Lucie Cotterill on [email protected]

Welcome to the IH network!

A warm welcome to our newest network members!

IH Galway Cultural Institute, established by Celestine Rowland and David Niland in 1989, is a dynamic, year-round school located on a state-of-the-art campus overlooking the Atlantic. They offer a rich array of English language training, from General English to Pre-University courses, and are committed to both academic excellence and environmental sustainability.

Also joining us from Galway is IH Galway Language Centre. Founded by Patrick Creed and Niamh McElwaine in 1987, this thriving centre has 16 classrooms and an average of 250 students weekly. They provide diverse English language training, including Exam Preparation, Business English, and Short-Term Junior Groups as well as teacher training.

We also welcome IH Taranto, a community-focused school in Puglia, Southern Italy. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025, IH Taranto offers years of experience running courses for all ages, from General English to IGCSE preparation, serving both the local community and wider region.

We are excited to welcome these dynamic institutions to our network and look forward to their continued success as part of the IH family.

Eulogio Cremades: a century of IH history

This February 1st marks the 100th anniversary of Eulogio Cremades, the visionary who shaped International House Córdoba and Huelva into what it is today. Eulogio, alongside Brita and John Haycraft, worked tirelessly to pioneer the language learning industry as we know it, connecting cultures and breaking barriers.

To celebrate his legacy, IH Córdoba and IH Huelva have created a “time capsule” featuring incredible photos from 1953–1970. You’ll find Eulogio laughing with teachers in the school’s bar, guiding Spanish students through Córdoba’s stunning Alcázar, and at the opening of Huelva’s school.

Eulogio wasn’t just a pioneer of our industry—he was an ambassador of Córdoba to the world. This tribute is a small slice of our shared history, a reminder of the passion and dedication that unites us all as part of the IH family.

We hope you enjoy this journey into the past!

Personalised Study Programmes at IH Newcastle

IH Newcastle are proud of their Personal Study Programme (PSP), a unique learning pathway which has developed over the past 20 years since it’s conception in 2005.

PSP is an hour timetabled session daily with specialised teachers to offer students the chance to work on their language skills in targeted areas, helping them overcome personal challenges and achieve academic and professional excellence. It provides a flexible learning environment where students can progress at their own pace, supported by an excellent teacher-to-student ratio, ensuring personalised attention and guidance.

Within PSP dynamic activities are organised to promote deeper engagement and practical language use, such as TED Talk Discussions and recently a journal competition. Students have access to computer and text-based materials, allowing them to develop according to their own needs and learning styles. Additionally, PSP provides specialised writing and speaking feedback, fostering significant improvements in communication skills.

General English students can choose to add on PSP as part of their course. For students studying Academic English, Cambridge Examination Pathway, or Business English courses, PSP is an integral part of their course.

This innovative programme is always developing, and we look forward to seeing where the next 19 years will lead for IH Newcastle’s PSP!
