The demand for EFL teachers for young learners is high and most teachers will be required to teach this age group (6 - 17 year olds) at some point in their career. You can get qualified and specialise in this area with the IH Online Course in Teaching Young Learners and Teenagers.
This course runs regularly as part of our IH Online Teacher Training Institute, but the April 2020 course will include a series of live online sessions focusing on applying course content to the online environment and offering support for those new to this context of teaching. This is at no extra cost to the participant to help EFL teachers during Covid-19.
Fouad Lakbir, a full-time ESL teacher at IH Apollo English in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam took the course recently, and shares his experience below.
Why did you decide to take the IH Online Course in Teaching Young Learners and Teenagers with International House’s OTTI?
I have already attended three courses with the International House Online Teacher Training Institute. The previous courses are the main reason why I took the IH Online Course in Teaching Young Learners and Teenagers. Being trained by excellent, supportive and qualified tutors with a lot of experience and expertise has encouraged me to take more courses with International House. It's also part of my professional development plan.
How did you find the IH Online Course in Teaching Young Learners and Teenagers content?
I found the content effective and practical and it met my expectations. It also catered to my professional needs. I have been teaching young learners and teenagers for a while, but my experience was lacking in a clear understanding of how young learners and teenagers learn, how to meet their needs in terms of activities, classroom management, and the teaching of both language systems and skills.
I have a lot of takeaways from the course that I'm using now with my young learners. It was very useful given the range of areas it covers. With the course, I now feel very confident approaching young learners and teenagers.
What is the most valuable aspect of the IH Online Course in Teaching Young Learners and Teenagers?
The most valuable aspect of the course is the exchange of ideas among the course participants from all over the world with a lot of experience in different contexts. This exchange of ideas, techniques, activities, and insights has opened my eyes to a lot that we, teachers, should carefully consider when planning for and teaching young learners and teenagers. Also valuable is the tutors' feedback and comments about our input which serves as a signpost.
Would you recommend taking the IH Online Course in Teaching Young Learners and Teenagers?
I highly recommend taking the course. Its practicality along with the different areas that it comprises of will surely qualify teachers and equip them with practical and up-to-date knowledge to successfully help their learners grow and develop their language skills and knowledge base of English.
How did you find the process of learning and being taught online?
Being a full-time teacher with almost 25 hours per week and having no time for a face-to-face course, I found the IH course very useful and flexible especially the substantial support on the part of the tutors.
Would you recommend the OTTI to a friend or colleague?
I would definitely recommend it to my colleagues.
The next IH Online Course in Teaching Young Learners and Teenagers starts on April 25th, 2020.
