IH Director of Studies Course

Who is it for?

  • Experienced teachers, preferably with a Diploma qualification
  • Teachers that are about to start, or recently took on, an academic manager’s post
  • Experienced teachers that are new to International House and looking to take on a Director of Studies role
  • Experienced International House teachers that are preparing to take on a Director of Studies role

Aims

To give an overview of what can be expected in a DOS's job and the variety of tasks and responsibilities involved. Interactive sessions are designed to help participants experience being in the role of an International House DOS.


Content

13 modules covered over a 12  to 16-week period. Participants are expected to dedicate a minimum of 5 hours per week to the tasks. The course covers the following areas: Defining The Duties Of An Academic Manager, Communication, How To Manage Change, Time Management, The Recruitment Process, Induction, Developing A Teacher Development Programme, Conducting Observations, Motivating Staff, Conducting Appraisals, Customer Satisfaction, Financing courses.


Structure & Assessment

The course is run entirely online and assessed by qualified tutors with experience of academic management and teacher training. Assessment is via an end of course reflective essay and an electronic portfolio made up of homework tasks from each module, all of which is moderated by the IH Assessment Unit. Participants are expected to submit a minimum of 60% of the tasks to their portfolio.


Prices

IH staff: £300

Non-IH staff: £600

These prices include VAT. If the fee will be paid by a business outside of the UK, VAT can be deducted from the prices listed. Please enquire upon application.

Time Commitment

A minimum of 5 to 7 hours per week spent online and doing tasks. Working hours are generally flexible, but some tasks require group work and have set deadlines.
