Get qualified to teach online with the IH Certificate in Online Tutoring (IH COLT). This 100% virtual course focuses on the skills, techniques and approaches to online tutoring and is ideal for teachers who are seeking professional training in this area.

The course has four modules covering everything you need to know and is delivered 100% online by our expert IH Online Teacher Training Institute tutors. Teodora Manole, Head of Teacher Training at IH Bucharest, took the course recently. Here she shares with us what she found most beneficial on the course!

Why did you decide to take the IH Certificate in Online Tutoring course with International House’s OTTI?

I’d had my eyes on it for a while, but the catalyst for me, as for many others, I’d imagine, was the sudden move to online. I was particularly interested in improving my online training skills, as I was due to start tutoring on my first 100% online CELTA in just a couple of weeks after completing the course.

How did you find the IH Certificate in Online Tutoring course content?

Had I done it prior to the start of the pandemic, I probably would have found most of it new and possibly a bit overwhelming. As it was, the course content about synchronous tutoring just came to confirm what I’d had a chance to discover myself in the previous couple of months. I would have probably benefitted even more from the updated version of the course (I understand it’s been revised to better reflect the current reality), but even so, I gathered a lot of valuable ideas from the course, the tutors and my colleagues. I really liked the content about asynchronous tutoring, because it emphasised the need for building a community and building relationships with the trainees. I haven’t had the chance to put this into practice yet, but am looking forward to an opportunity to do so.

What is the most valuable aspect of the IH Certificate in Online Tutoring course?

I definitely think it is the added value that the tutors bring. My tutors (Jen and Lucie) were both very supportive, open to questions and willing to share their own experience. I also appreciated that they consistently provided examples of good practice by applying exactly what we were learning about, in a very natural way.

Would you recommend taking the IH Certificate in Online Tutoring course? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend it to anyone about to start teaching or tutoring online because of the wealth of information on the course, the involvement and support of the tutors and the chance to exchange ideas and build connections with colleagues from all over the world.
