About the job
International House Valladolid is looking for three teachers to join our existing team. This is a full time opportunity which pays 1250 Euros per month NET. The school pays a settling in allowance (paid in January) of 200 EUR. Social security contributions are paid directly to the department of social security on behalf of the teacher and assistance is provided in obtaining a Spanish NIE, Social Security number and a Spanish health card. The contract starts on Monday 16th of September 2019 and finishes on Friday 14th of June 2020. However, there is a mandatory induction for all teachers on Friday 13th September. Teachers are normally expected to teach 24 hours a week although in cases where a teacher is consistently teaching less than 24 hours per week during quiet periods, they may be asked to teach up to 26 hours per week in busier periods to offset this. Monday to Thursday can feel very intense with morning classes (including off-site) classes likely and later afternoon/evening classes taking place as standard. Weekends are off with the exception of two Saturdays a year for whole school events which teachers will be compensated for with two Fridays off in-lieu. Whilst there are some lessons on Fridays, Fridays are generally reserved for parents' meetings and bi-monthly mandatory professional development sessions and teachers' meetings. In addition to teaching, teachers are expected to plan (without the use of a single course book but with access to a wide variety of materials) interesting and effective lessons to very young learners, young learners and adults in a variety of contexts (general English, conversation, exam preparation, etc). There are approximately 23 paid days off within the contract time which mainly fall around the Easter and Christmas breaks. The school takes professional development seriously and we encourage all applicants to discuss the professional development program in interview.
You will have a C2 level of English and be either a native speaker or have an internationally recognized C2 level certificate.
You will have a CELTA or equivalent (we do not recognize online TEFL certificates).
You will have a minimum of two years of EFL teaching experience and will have experience of teaching Young Learners (essential).
You will be enthusiastic, organized and professional.
You will have a clear criminal background check or be able to obtain one with assistance.
You will have two checkable references.
Ideally you will speak some Spanish but this is not essential.
Ideally you will have a driving licence and be prepared to do some driving but this is not essential.
Ideally you will have the IH Young Learner certificate but this is not essential.
About the school and City
About the school and Valladolid
The school has two centers and we work with a number of businesses and schools around the Valladolid area. Some classrooms have IWBs but all classrooms have audio facilities. Both centers are well equipped with materials, a photocopier and access to computers.
Valladolid is approximately 220 KM North of Madrid in Spain's wine growing region. Madrid can be reached by high speed train in an hour although there are also buses which take much longer but cost less. The cost of living is generally cheaper than in other parts of Spain and a room in shared accommodation in the city center costs around 300 EUR per month. Public transport is very cheap and with a bono card a single bus trip costs 0.75 cents. Valladolid is known for being a very good place to learn Spanish and as well as being known for the fine (and very affordable!) wine the region is also famous for its food. Whilst there are an increasing number of vegetarian and seafood options Castilla y Leon is a meat lovers' paradise with Valladolid being famous for its suckling lamb, nearby Segovia and Salamanca being famous for suckling pig, and Avila being famous for its fantastic steaks.
Valladolid has various cultural buildings including former homes of Columbus and Cervantes, a Cathedral, a multitude of churches, museums and art galleries. It has a large student population so there is also an abundance of bars, restaurants and nightclubs to suit all tastes and budgets.
Valladolid has cool winters and warm summers so teachers should expect lower temperatures in December/January before the temperatures start moving upwards again.
