The Programme
12.45 Welcome
13.00 – 13.45: Developing strategies to address AI issues | Vicky Saumell
Despite the now quite widespread application of AI in ELT contexts, a critical analysis of GenAI discloses multiple issues. Becoming aware of AI’s functioning and issues is only the first step towards the development of strategies to address them. We will identify and look at these issues and design a proactive action plan to work together towards an ethical and responsible use of AI.
Vicky Saumell is a teacher, teacher educator, materials writer and presenter. She has worked for major publishers, especially in the areas of project-based learning and the meaningful use of technology for language learning. She has been the IATEFL Learning Technologies SIG Coordinator. She has had an extensive career teaching at primary and secondary level schools in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and continues to work as a freelancer for publishers and educational institutions.
14.00 – 14.30: My robot helper: How AI can help Academic Managers (and trainers) save time | Ri Willoughby – IH London
We all know that feeling of spending hours writing up appraisals or struggling to write a tricky email. Academic managers and those responsible for professional development face a myriad of daily tasks which are both necessary and time-consuming. We have been experimenting with a range of ways to use AI to help with these tasks and this practical talk will give you all our tips, tricks and tools to help you get a bit of your time back
14.40 – 15.10: Get started with AI in the classroom | Padraig Meehan – IH Córdoba Sierra
Practical teaching ideas you can use in your everyday classes. Skip the flashy AI gimmicks and discover how to make AI work for you. With a focus on your students’ language acquisition, we’ll explore what this technology adds to your dynamic classroom toolbox.
15.25 – 15.55: Empowering language learning with AI: Practical insights for global classrooms | Sylvia Dally – IH London
Artificial Intelligence is transforming language education, offering powerful tools to support teaching and learning across all four language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This session provides language teachers with a practical overview of AI-driven applications that can enrich their teaching, streamline preparation, and support learner autonomy. Using examples from German, English, French, Japanese, and Korean, the session aims to inspire educators of all languages with adaptable ideas and resources.
16.05 – 16.35: Practical ideas to assess with AI | Pilar Capaul – IH Buenos Aires
In this practical session, we’ll explore how AI can support teachers in designing effective and engaging assessment activities, not only to understand where students are in their learning journey, but also to allow them to use AI to demonstrate understanding, reflect on their learning and put classroom knowledge into action through ready-to-use ideas and examples.
16.45 – 17.15: AI can’t high-five: Why teachers win every time | Stephen Farren – IH Belfast
AI is transforming education at lightning speed. However, there are parts of teaching it will never replace, like high-fives and handing out certificates. In this interactive session I’ll explore the human qualities that set teachers apart from technology. Through stories, reflection, and interaction, you’ll see why the essence of great teaching remains profoundly human. And why, in a world of rapid automation, you’ve still got this!
17.25 – 18.00: Don’t just use it, use it well! – AI literacy for teachers and students | Joanna Szoke & Zsofi Menyhei
As we’re becoming more and more used to using AI in our teaching, we now have time to deal with something that’s even more important than how we can grade student papers with it. And that is whether we should use it to grade student papers in the first place? Or what to do with students cyberbullying each other with deepfakes or believing information or sources to be true when, in fact, they are AI-generated? Being skilled users of AI actually starts at becoming AI literate, so in this hands-on workshop, we’re going to look at what AI literacy is, why it’s important, and what activities we can try to improve our students’ and our own AI literacy.
