Following on from their successful ‘pre-pandemic’ cycle of teacher training seminars, International House Portugal is thrilled to restart this initiative and invite you to a new series of seminars.
These free sessions are designed for all English teachers working in mainstream education, private schools or language schools. The seminars are all highly practical and participants will go away with new ideas and activities that they can use and adapt for their own teaching. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance for each day of seminars they attend.

This session explores the origins of scaffolding in the ELT classroom and connects them to the wider definition, before moving on to link this theory to effective classroom practice in terms of teacher, student and task. We will end by applying these principles to typical classroom situations and discuss how scaffolding can be used to support learning and troubleshoot some common challenges language teachers face when adopting a scaffolded approach.

We know providing challenge for students is a Good Thing, but during the pandemic we may have found ourselves taking our foot off the "extra challenge" accelerator as we deal with the everyday challenges. Bearing this in mind, this session will explore small steps we can take to bring the right amount of challenge into our classrooms, both linguistically and through using activities which go beyond rote learning.

Presenter: Beverly Whittall – IH Braga
Date: Saturday 21st May, 16:00 - 17:15 GMT
This session explores the lure and dangers of the superficial fun factor, and argues that we should instead ensure our students gain a deeper sense of enjoyment from their lessons and language learning. We shall look at some differences between ‘fun’ and ‘enjoyment’, both theoretical and practical, and explore ways that we can include activities and approaches which go beyond ‘fun’ in our lessons.
