How to access meaningful CPD for busy teachers

Fiona DunlopDate: Oct 10th, 2021
Time: 11 am
Speaker: Fiona Dunlop

Speaker Bio

Fiona Dunlop is the Principal at Wimbledon School of English, London, one of the oldest independent language schools in the UK. Fiona has over 30 years worldwide experience in the field of English language training, including such areas as Teacher Training, Business and Soft Skills Training and Academic and School Management. She holds an MA in Psychology and an English UK/Trinity Diploma in ELT Management.

Brief

This session aims to raise awareness of what CPD is, what is available and relevant to English language trainers and how to integrate CPD opportunities seamlessly into their busy lives. An underlying premise is that in order to develop effectively we must reflect in a meaningful way and recognise our ongoing achievements in order to move forward.

In this workshop I aim to look at the various ways we can access professional development, how to select what is useful and relevant for us and our clients and how to gather evidence through reflective practices to monitor and measure the impact on our clients.
I will provide practical, easy to implement ideas and activities which can be integrated into the everyday working life of a busy English trainer, including a number of useful hints and reflective tools. We will consider the benefits of self-observation models including evidence-based reflection.
The session will also give the audience the opportunity to reflect and set professional SMART goals relevant to their environment and their students.

Over 30 years later in 2001, the CEFR came to light as a proficiency guide to European languages (COE, n.d). Since then, textbook authors and language professionals have been relying heavily on CEFR scales and descriptors as the backdrop for various purposes such as testing, curriculum design, etc…This session will serve as an introduction to CEFR as an indispensable ELT tool, how to comprehend it, and other tools applying the CEFR to help with testing and curriculum design in various teaching contexts.
