Chia Suan Chong - My ELF Conversion: the Pragmatics of ELF
I was one of the cynical ones. When it comes to transactional communication in ELF scenarios how can the celebration of individual differences promote intelligibility? And what about phatic meanings? Doesn’t the non-native speaker's choice of language affect the impressions they are creating? Armed with my scepticism, I decided to investigate the NNSs’ realisations of politeness and the factors that contribute to the NNSs’ perceptions of their fellow NNS interlocutors. In this talk, I will attempt to summarise key issues in recent ELF pragmatic research and my own empirical findings, and share with you my five-year journey with ELF.
