An entry-level course that trains candidates to teach foreign languages to non-native speakers. Upon qualifying, participants will have reached a standard suitable for employment as a language teacher.
The IHC focuses on the planning and execution of lessons through teaching practise, written assignments and group discussions, all of which are observed by experienced tutors’, online and face-to-face, who provide helpful feedback and encourage continuous self-evaluation.
Areas covered include: lesson preparation and the selection of teaching materials, classroom management skills, student motivation, language awareness and identification of common learning problems.
The course is run online, with a face-to-face teaching practise component. There are 14 compulsory modules, plus further optional modules towards the end of the course. They are expected to complete a minimum of 6 hours teaching practise throughout the course eg. 8 x 40 minute lessons with two different levels.
The course is taught by qualified, experienced tutors who hold an online tutoring qualification. Suitably qualified local tutors conduct the observations and the final portfolio is moderated by the IH Assessment Unit. The grading of the course is Pass or Fail.

Important: the IHC course includes observed and assessed teaching practice during which teachers will teach classes of real students and a local tutor is required. For this reason we can currently only accept applications from candidates in the same location as an IH school that can provide a tutor and teaching practice opportunities. Please see our directory to check if there is a school in your location.
