Over the course of the past year, IH Geneva sent a total of 25,000 CHF (£17,303) to the international aid charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF). They have an agreement whereby money raised in any way by the staff is doubled by the school and sent to MSF. In addition, staff are charged a small fee for taking part in social events and this is then doubled by the school.
IH Geneva also donate any special income they receive which is not derived from the provision of training, ie payment for other services, advice or consultancy to MSF. When they hand out language courses as prizes to local organisations and groups, or when they give free spaces on their intensive courses to deserving students they ask, in return, for a small donation to the charity.
“We chose MSF because most of the doctors and nurses working in horrible places have given up their own careers/time/family to help others,” says IH Geneva’s Director General, Douglas Crawford. “While I am not a good enough person to follow their lead, the least these people deserve is our financial support as they get paid a pittance for serving in the field and most of the money raised is spent on medical supplies for those who need it.”
He adds: “The fact that they are truly international, apolitical and seek to improve the lot of human beings on our planet, regardless of race, creed or colour, was something that I thought fitted well with our beliefs as an IH school.”
